Position Title: Maternal Health Graphic Design Volunteer  

Reports to:  Mariana Montaño, Maternal Health Coordinator

Location:   Remote  

Introduction  

Compañeros En Salud (CES) is an affiliate of Partners In Health in Chiapas, Mexico. The organization’s

CES strives to create volunteer positions that serve the organization’s mission and priorities as well as provide a substantive learning experience. Applicants must demonstrate high level proficiency in Spanish or English.  

Support to Volunteer  

Although this is an unpaid position, the volunteer will be given the opportunity to connect with, and form a working relationship with, internationally renowned leaders in the field of global community health.  

Timeline  

This volunteer role can be completed remotely. This role has a flexible desired start date but preference will be given to candidates who are willing to begin immediately. We estimate this project will require 20 hours per month for 3 months.  

Organizational Profile  

Partners In Health (PIH) is an international health organization relentlessly committed to improving the health of the poor and marginalized. PIH partners with local governments to build local capacity and works closely with impoverished communities to deliver high-quality health care, address the root causes of illness, train providers, advance research, and advocate for global policy change. PIH currently has implementation programs in Haiti, Rwanda, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Peru, Mexico, Russia, Sierra Leone and Navajo Nation. Through our partnership with Harvard Medical School and the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, we support a wide range of programs in dozens of other countries around the world.  

General Responsibilities  

The project is centered around the quality improvement of the obstetrics services delivered in a rural maternity center and hospital. This is supported by the implementation of the WHO’s Safe Childbirth Checklist and other protocols with the CES team. The CES maternal health team consists of a maternal health coordinator, 7 obstetric nurses in training, 1 perinatal nurse, and 1 professional midwife, various global health clinical fellows, as well as a number of community health workers in the different communities in which CES operates.  

The Graphic Design Volunteer for Maternal Health will create approximately 30 graphics for an innovative training curriculum for maternal health, community health workers. The graphics for the educational manual will be preferably done as compelling comic book illustrations; however, we are open to different artistic styles of educational graphics.  

Specific Responsibilities  

  • Create graphics based on provided maternal health topics  
  • Report to Maternal Health Coordinator for manual project  
  • Assist team as much as feasible in designing educational manual  
  • Provide artistic/graphic expertise in project design  

Qualifications  

  • Proficiency in creating electronically available educational graphics  
  • Previous experience designing marketing materials preferred  
  • An interest in working in the field of global health or with non-profits and promoting social justice  
  • Ability to work well independently  
  • Interest in developing new projects  
  • Exemplary interpersonal skills; ability to collaborate effectively with culturally diverse staff across departments and country 
  • Interest in maternal health desired
