Position Title: Research and Impact Volunteer

Reports to: Research and Impact Coordinator

Location: Angel Albino Corzo, Chiapas

Type of Employment: Full time

Contract Duration: 1 year from joining the organization, renewable until March 2023.

Position Mission:

Support in the design and development of CES research and impact activities, strengthening the research and academic dissemination capacity of the organization.

Responsibilities:

  • Support in the development of research projects/academic dissemination activities linked to the Partners In Health (PIH) Cross-Site COVID-19 Research Network initiative, which brings together academics and practitioners from across PIH sites, Brigham And Women’s Hospital Boston and Harvard University to build joint COVID-19 research capacity.

Approximately 30% of working time

 

Studies currently participating in:

  • Study of a cohort of chronically ill patients before and after the advent of COVID-19.
  • Study of a cohort of contacts of suspected and confirmed cases of COVID-19.

Publications with the working group to date:

  • Under review: Rebounds in childhood immunizations during the COVID-19 pandemic: Experiences in Haiti, Lesotho, Liberia, and Malawi.
  • Under review: Disruptions in maternal health service utilization during the first ten months of the COVID-19 pandemic: Experiences in Haiti, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Mexico, and Sierra Leone.

The volunteer will be expected to perform the following activities in relation to the above mentioned projects:

  • Communication in English with collaborators.
  • Cleaning of databases in Microsoft Excel and combination of them in STATA (the analysis will be carried out by other collaborators).
  • Bibliographic search.
  • Writing of scientific articles/other academic materials.

 

  • Support in the development of other research projects/academic dissemination activities led or directly supported by the Research and Impact Coordination.

Approximately 40% of working time

 

Studies currently involved in:

  • Study of the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of the WHO psychological intervention PM+ (Problem Management Plus) through a randomized controlled trial in rural communities in Chiapas.
  • Development and validation of a tool to evaluate the satisfaction of users of primary health care services in rural areas of Chiapas.
  • Development and validation of a tool to evaluate the satisfaction of users of childbirth care services in rural areas of Chiapas.

The volunteer should perform the following activities in relation to the projects:

  • Elaboration of protocols.
  • Design of specific data collection systems for the investigations.
  • Training of the data collectors.
  • Management of the research data bases.
  • Data analysis.
  • Bibliographic search.
  • Writing of scientific articles/other academic material.
  • Preparation of abstracts for congresses.
  • Presentation of scientific papers at national/international congresses.

 

  • Ensuring that the PIH Boston Impact team has the most up-to-date CES impact information available.

Approx. 20% of work time

  • Create CES impact stories on a regular basis.
  • Create/update CES impact messages on a regular basis.

 

  • Support in the organization of the first Congress on Global Health and Social Medicine in Hispanic America: Innovations in Primary Care and Dignified Care.

Approximately 10% of work time

  • Oversee communication with speakers.
  • Identification of key actors in the Hispanic American landscape for information dissemination campaigns.

Depending on activities and needs the responsibilities may be adapted according to specific projects conferred by the immediate leader.

 

Requirements:

  • Education
    • Minimum Bachelor’s degree in one of the following subjects: Medicine, Nursing, Global Health, Public Health, Health Systems, Biostatistics, Medical Sciences, Psychology, Anthropology, Sociology or other scientific degrees at the discretion of the selection team.

 

  • Experience
    • Experience as a researcher, preferably 1 year and including participation in congresses and academic publications.

 

  • Technical Skills
    • Basic knowledge of qualitative and quantitative research methods.
    • Basic knowledge of SPSS/STATA/R or other statistical analysis software.
    • Advanced knowledge of using Excel.

 

  • Competencies
    • Good written and oral communication skills in English and Spanish. Good use of academic jargon from the field of public health, global health and social medicine. Active listening. Team player. Proactivity. Good time management.
