Background:
The Feed the Future Ag Diversification Activity is a five-year project that contributes to USAID/ Malawi’s Feed the Future goal of sustainably reducing poverty and stunting in eight districts of central and southern Malawi. The activity fosters inclusive and sustainable growth of Malawi’s agricultural sector. The activity also seeks to improve the nutritional status of women and children under five through a proven nutrition sensitive approach of layering agriculture and nutrition behavior change interventions in rural communities, while increasing the competitiveness of high value, nutrient-rich value chains through support for agricultural enterprises and increased access to markets and finance. The program is financed by the American people through USAID Malawi.
Private sector engagement is a key component of AgDiv’s work to support the development of inclusive value chains, and efficiently deliver development interventions. AgDiv works with private sector partners to leverage existing investments in infrastructure and development to more efficiently delivered interventions that support smallholder livelihoods and resilience.

The Activity intends to recruit a Private Sector Development Adviser to provide high level technical support for private sector development work.

Private Sector Development Adviser
The Private Sector Development Adviser will provide strategic and technical support for partnerships with AgDiv’s private sector partners. The Private Sector Development Advisor will build relationships with private sector entities, identify areas for collaboration with AgDiv, contribute to the design of partnership strategies, and provide technical assistance for AgDiv and its private sector partners in the area of business and financial analysis.

The Private Sector Development Adviser will report to the Chief of Party.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Support AgDiv’s engagement with existing and potential partners, including maintaining contacts with partner staff, managing communications between AgDiv and its partners, and facilitating linkages between partners
Identify promising private sector development strategies and areas for collaboration with the potential to promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth
Work with private sector partners to develop business strategies, identify needs and constraints to growth, and formulate business plans and proposals
Provide support for private sector access to finance across a large range of product types
Provide technical assistance and/or capacity building in the area of business finance, including budgeting, cash flow projections and analysis, risk assessment, etc.
Contribute to economic and policy analysis informing programming decisions and policy advocacy
Provide other support for private sector development activities as required
Required Qualifications:
10+ years of experience in private sector and business development
A Masters Degree in economics, agribusiness, finance, or a closely related field
Experience working with private sector agriculture in Malawi; experience in sustainable energy or agroforestry highly desired
Experience conducting financial and economic analysis, including cash flow projections and return on investment analysis; good knowledge of private sector financing products
Experience managing private sector client relationships
Good knowledge of the constraints faced by businesses in Malawi and practical perspective on business strategies and approaches
Excellent writing and presentation skills, including the ability to develop business case materials
Ability to travel frequently within Malawi
Interview:
