About Market Development Facility (MDF)

Market Development Facility is an Australian Government funded multi-country initiative which promotes sustainable economic development, through higher incomes for women and men, in our partner countries.
We connect individuals, businesses, governments and NGOs with each other, and with markets at home and abroad. This enhances investment and coordination and allows partnerships to flourish, strengthening inclusive economic growth.

MDF is funded by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT). It is implemented by Palladium in partnership with Swisscontact.
In Timor-Leste, MDF promotes economic diversification and poverty reduction through partnerships in agribusiness and tourism. The team also encourages entrepreneurship by providing financial and advisory support to innovative businesses.
Your Opportunity
MDF has a number of three-month internships available in our September 2022 intake. In Timor-Leste, interns will support MDF’s efforts to promote economic development, particularly through fieldwork in the agriculture sector.
MDF Internships offer a chance to learn on-the-job skills while also contributing to actual projects. Interns receive a monthly stipend.
The Tourism Intern supports MDF’s efforts to promote economic development in Timor-Leste, particularly through fieldwork in the tourism sector. MDF Internships offer a chance to learn on-the-job skills while also contributing to actual projects. Interns receive a monthly stipend.
Key responsibilities will include:
• Meeting with tourists, tourism businesses, and government representatives to understand how tourism market’s function.
• Assisting analysis of markets, particularly to identify opportunities in tourism sector, or constraints to, economic growth.
• Working with MDF Business Advisers to develop innovative ideas to address market opportunity and constraints ideas. This will include assessing the technical and economic feasibility of ideas or business plans from potential partner organisations.
• Assist in communicating with potential partner organisations and assisting the negotiation of agreements with them.
• Developing good working relationships with partner organisations.
• Assisting with the implementation of interventions, particularly through visits to implementation sites. • Monitoring the results of implementation, particularly through field visits.
About You
MDF is looking for enthusiastic university graduates with a desire to learn and a keen interest in development in Timor-Leste.
In addition, successful interns will have:
• A bachelor’s degree in tourism, business, economic development or other related field.
• Graduated within the last two years, with a minimum Grade Point average of 3.0
• Excellent skills in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
• Excellent written and spoken Tetun language skills.
• Willingness to travel regularly and extensively within Timor-Leste.
Desirable Criteria
• Experience with fieldwork, research and data collection.
• Good written and spoken English language skills.
