Summary
In June 2020, the foundation established a new Communications Division, led by the Chief Communications Officer, to oversee the foundation’s global communications strategy. The division brings together internal and external communications to advance the foundation’s mission of a more equitable world.
The global Content and Campaigns team is responsible for targeting and engaging priority audiences with compelling content and campaigns to help advance our advocacy and programmatic goals and support the foundation’s brand. The team is responsible for the development and implementation of integrated marketing campaigns and managing foundation brand channels in alignment with our priorities. The team includes Goalkeepers, gatesfoundation.org, The Optimist, the Discovery Center, and the channel strategy and social media management for the foundation and our leadership.
The Channels and Audience Engagement team is responsible for the strategy, audience development and engagement, as well as day to day management of the foundation’s flagship digital communications channels, including social media, GatesFoundation.org (including our Ideas platform), the Optimist newsletter, and paid media. The team develops and implements audience engagement strategies to further the foundation’s advocacy objectives and brand goals.
The Deputy Director, Channel Strategy and Audience Engagement will be a key member of the Global Content and Campaigns leadership team within the foundation’s Communications division. They will be based in Seattle or Washington, DC and work collaboratively with colleagues across the foundation’s communications, advocacy, and regional teams to develop digital channel strategies, define key audience segments, implement premier digital campaigns.
The primary focus of this role is crafting and implementing a clear, cohesive digital channel strategy that supports foundation’s communications and advocacy goals and brand strategy. The Deputy Director will be responsible for articulating how the channel strategy drives engagement with our key audiences, including developing and maintaining audience segment definitions/personas and using audience research and digital channel metrics to identify audience insights that will inform the division and team’s work.
The Deputy Director will set the vision and lead a team managing the audience development and engagement strategies for brand and leadership social media channels, GatesFoundation.org, the Optimist newsletter, and paid media. They will need expertise in digital marketing, CRM and email marketing, web strategy, social media channel management, audience segmentation and paid media. The Deputy Director will work closely with the Content and Creative team to develop creative briefs and strategies to meet the team’s objectives across channels.
They will work closely with internal and external partners to build sophisticated audience insights and understanding, specifically around niche audience segments like academics, policy wonks and private sector leaders who inform and shape the systems and policies that impact our issue areas in global health, development and education
The Deputy Director will also work closely with the internal Foundation Voice, Media Relations and advocacy teams to develop proactive and reactive strategies to enhance the foundation’s news relevance and help manage risks to the foundation’s work, reputation and brand.
Responsibilities
Effectively manage and lead an agile, inclusive, diverse, and successful team of channels and audience engagement professionals
P lay an active role as a member of the Communications L eadership team
Develop long-term digital channels strategy for audience en gagement, acquisition and retention across owned channels , that includes an approach to global and regional digital cha nnel expansion
Manage multi-tiered network of digital and social media channels ; consistently prime target audiences with meaningful content (developed in partnership with the content team) and deliver on key moments and campaigns
Partner with the brand, content, and channel leads to draft content strategies and briefs that reflect audience insights, channel best practices, and historical content performance data
Manage the team’s strategic acquisition model to scale and grow channels like the Optimist to new markets ; growing subscriber list of high-quality influencers
Partner with Measurement & Insights ( M&I ) team to develop measurement framework with clear critical metrics and targets to measure ongoing channel health and performance as well as frameworks for evaluating key campaigns and moments across channels
Partner with foundation’s regional teams to ensure global and regional channel strategies, objectives, and key audiences are aligned and complimentary.
Qualifications
You will be a sharp , strategic, creative, inspiring communications leader . The ideal candidate will have experience leading strong teams, developing digital channel and audience engagement strategy , and working closely with creative and content, earned media, and subject matter experts on behalf of large, complex, global organizations. The Deputy Director will understand the strategic work of the foundation and the global communications and media landscape . They will be digitally-minded with experience managing complex networks for global and regional digital channels . They should have a strong sense of curiosity, excellent judgement and willingness to collaborate. Global experience and/or proficiency in additional languages is a plus. Additional qualifications include:
Masters or Bachelor’s degree in relevant field; Communications, Marketing, English, Journalism, Literature, Public Relations, Political Science or other relevant area of study
A minimum of 10 + years of progressive professional experience in a similar leadership role in communications, journalism, public policy, or a related field , including management experience, collaborative experience with a wide range of internal and external partners , and excellent communications skills.
Experience working in non-profit/public health, government, communications agency, or private sector organization is strongly preferred.
A strong knowledge of evolving digital channel landscape and digital marketing trends
Excellent people management skills, and ability to recruit and develop diverse and passionate staff
Understanding of key external communications trends, channels and distribution methods
Preference for international experience and shown cultural proficiency
Experience in a dynamic environment with demonstrated ability to balance multiple and competing demands and establish priorities, while providing continual attention to detail.
Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills, in positions requiring communication with a broad and diverse audience on a range of complex and technical issues
Ability to offer creative solutions to complex problems and translate options into implementable solutions
Demonstrated flexibility to new challenges and situations
Strong and valued teammate with a sense of humor and humility; a ‘roll up your sleeves’ standout colleague
Passion for the foundation’s mission
