The Global Health Finance team is seeking an upbeat and collaborative Finance Associate to provide business and financial support to the Global Health division. This role will directly support the division’s Biotech Accelerator and the Program Strategy Teams (PST) in making and managing Gates Foundation funded investments in healthcare R&D, delivery programs and transformative technologies. The PSTs range from disease areas such as TB and HIV to functional teams such as Vaccine Development, and the Biotech Accelerator is a new team with the vision to create novel technology capabilities that enable the PST work in pursuit of the foundation’s mission. The team will conceive, design, and test fundamentally new biotech platforms that have the potential to change current standard methodologies or business models and show proof of concept for these platforms. By using grants, equity, and donor capital, the team will work to ensure the capabilities they advance reach broad societal benefit and transition these new technology platforms to execution partners.
Responsibilities include investment structuring, assessment of grantee/vendor financial position, evaluation, and negotiation of investment budgets, and continued financial monitoring of multi-year investments. The Finance Associate must also be successful at influencing through partnership and people skills and should have venture capital or investment banking experience as well as other experience using financial analysis and modeling skills to influence outcomes. Other skills for success include solution-orientation and a proactive approach to accomplishing their responsibilities. The ability to synthesize data is key, and strong analytic skills, both at a conceptual level and at a technical level are highly valued. The candidate must also be passionate about the foundation’s mission, particularly in addressing the global health inequities that exist today. This role is based out of the Seattle headquarters and may involve limited travel.
Core Responsibilities
Investments
Partner with the Program Officers to provide financial and business perspectives in investment-making for biotech start-ups
Perform financial diligence of grantees/vendors, evaluating their positions and risks
Collaborate with grantees/vendors to develop and analyze investment budgets
Analyze the financial health of organizations through the review of financial documents
Structure investments to optimize cash disbursements in consideration of scientific and operational risks, factoring in landmarks and other aspects of the product development cycle
Financial Planning & Pipeline Management
Build and manage financial planning tools that support decision-making and communication with Leadership
Work closely with Leadership and Program Officers to translate strategy into mid and long-range forecasts and annual plans
Perform analysis and provide Leadership with strategic and financial information to support prioritization and decision-making
Participate in transactions and special projects with significant financial analysis components
Core Knowledge and Skills
Strong analytical skills, ability to absorb and synthesize data, build quantitative models, and distill key insights
Experience with venture capital, investment banking or private equity activities
Experience with organizational due diligence and financial statement analysis
Experience with finance processes, such as budgeting, forecasting, reporting, etc.
International work experience, in low- and middle-income countries, highly preferred
Knowledge of Global Health and/or infectious diseases preferred
Advanced Excel skills
Positive relationship building skills and ability to influence without formal authority
Ability to communicate sophisticated data and financial concepts to partners with a diverse set of backgrounds, including leadership, program staff, grantees/vendors, and other partners
Ability to conduct high quality interactions and ensure clear and consistent communications with external parties
Ability to prioritize multiple projects and navigate multidisciplinary teams in a matrixed organization
Ability to work independently with solution-oriented mentality, intellectual curiosity, and a good sense of humor
Education and Experience
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree with 3-7 years of finance experience such as corporate finance, venture capital, private equity, investment banking, biotech/start-ups
Must be able to legally work in the country where this position is located without visa sponsorship
